There are more than 200 different types of of morays around the world, they live in different environments. The smallest moray is about 12 cm larger than about 4 meters. The largest variety of this species is found in warm tropical waters or reefs, like those in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
The green moray depends on the camouflage and smell to catch her food since she has very bad eyesight. To be able to hide the inside of its mouth it is colored to adapt to the environment, this allows the moray to keep her mouth open and unnoticed while waiting for her prey.
There are very few predators of the green moray, among them the barracuda, groupers, marine snakes and other moray eels. The moray is carnivorous and eats almost anything.
Morays are sometimes seen as aggressive or moody, this is only a bad reputation since moray eels hide from humans, are very shy and attack human beings only in self-defense.
Diving in Playa del Carmen and diving in Cozumel it is very likely that you will come across moray eels. Join us on a night dive where you can see these animals hunting your dinner!
